There are seven potential roadblocks to you being a effective communicator. To master the skill of effective communication you must understand each of these roadblocks.
1. The Other Person’s Mindset
This includes the other person’s opinions and emotions, preconceived notions based on their past experiences. Also included in this is their misconceptions and biases along with their own personal agendas.The other person’s mindset may be the result of past disappointments and hurts and failures.
2. The Other Person’s Ego
The other person may think than are smarter and more experienced than you or they may think you are not smart enough or experienced enough at what you are talking about.
3. The Conflict of Personalities.
The other person may have a different kind of personality than you, therefore you must consider they may have different motivations and want different results.
4. The Listeners Perspective
This is similar to the dealing with different mindsets. It may be difficult to get the listener to share your perspective on the subject
5. Poor Listening
The lack of listening skill can be a very serious roadblock to becoming a good communicator. Everyone wants to be heard.
6. Time
Timing can create several obstacles with communication. First, the other person may be thinking of somewhere else because of the timing of your communication. Second, the other person may be thinking their time could be better spent than talking to you. Third, the other person may feel more pressed for time than they can give you.
